SUMMARY OF POSITION

We are seeking an attorney to join our in-house legal department. Associate general counsel is responsible for assisting the general counsel and other associate general counsel with various legal activities involving contract, business and employment issues. A successful candidate should possess excellent computer and reasoning skills, effective communication skills and a willingness to learn. Ideally, the candidate would possess knowledge and experience in the construction industry.

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Draft and negotiate contracts, subcontracts and other agreements
  • Draft and file legal pleadings, including mechanic’s liens and complaints
  • Review project procurement documents and perform legal review of contracts
  • Prepare, handle and respond to various claims
  • Assist with applying for, renewing and monitoring business registrations and licenses
  • Draft various legal communications, including notices and demands
  • Prepare business documents, such as loan agreements, notes, mortgages, corporate resolutions
  • Negotiate contracts, subcontracts and settlements
  • Provide debt collection and enforcement assistance
  • Liaise, assist and coordinate with outside counsel
  • Perform legal research
  • Keep abreast of legal news and topics affecting construction industry
  • Coordinate insurance documentation requirements
  • Provide or coordinate training to organization relating to contract law, employment law and other construction related legal issues
Requirements
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in civil practice and/or construction-related experience
  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • Specific experience and/or demonstrated interest in construction law
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize, meet deadlines and manage a large volume of contracts and associated issues
  • Familiarity with use of contract management software a plus, but not required
  • Experience negotiating contracts
  • Demonstrated capability in drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts
  • Willingness to do extensive reading and writing
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Driven to achieve excellent results and win-win negotiations for operations
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work under pressure
  • Manage time efficiently to meet deadlines
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel and PDF editing programs
  • Moderate to high understanding of contract language and terminology
  • Must be able to spend significant amounts of time in seated position working in front of a computer
  • Experience with AIA software and documents
  • Excellent at performing multiple tasks at the same time with accuracy
  • Resourcefulness and problem-solving aptitude
  • Interpersonal skills: able to effectively communicate with all levels of organization, outside counsel, opposing counsel and court
