Every morning, hundreds of our iconic red trucks roll out of our offices to job sites across the Mid-Atlantic region, where our crews are building roads, restoring infrastructure and improving the communities we all rely on. These crews operate in active work zones, with traffic moving just feet from their workspace. 

Here’s the reality: this is one of the most dangerous environments in construction. Work zone safety isn’t about checking a box or meeting a requirement. It’s about people. It’s about making sure every crew member goes home safely at the end of the day and that every driver passing through gets home safely, too. 

Work Zone Safety Starts with You
We see it every day.

Drivers speeding through narrowed lanes. Last-second merges. Eyes down for just a second too long. It doesn’t take much for things to go sideways.  

In Pennsylvania alone, there were more than 1,200 work zone crashes in 2024. Over 20 people didn’t make it home, hundreds more were injured. All of these incidents were preventable.  

The patterns are consistent:

  • Speeding or driving too fast for conditions
  • Distracted driving
  • Aggressive lane changes or late merges
  • Following too closely

A single second is all it takes. Here’s what makes the difference: 

  • Slowing down and follow the posted speed 
  • Staying alert and keeping your eyes up 
  • Merging when directed, not at the last second 
  • Keeping a safe following distance 
  • Being patient—this work is necessary

The People and Processes That Keep You Safe 
At Kinsley Construction, we partner with professional flagging crews who are constantly reading traffic and making real-time decisions to prevent accidents, so we can focus on getting our work done safely. These systems are built around the strict standards of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Those standards include: 

  • Clearly posted warning signs and reduced speeds 
  • Cones, barrels and arrow boards guiding traffic 
  • Certified flaggers managing movement 
  • Structured lane closures and detours 
  • High-visibility gear and proper lighting

Seconds Matter Out Here
When something goes wrong in a work zone, it happens fast. That’s why we invest in tools designed to give our crews more time to react. 

Our M&P crash trucks are built to take a hit if a vehicle doesn’t stop. We’re now adding AI-powered cameras that monitor traffic flow and alert crews the moment something feels off, giving them critical time to respond.  

We’re also introducing green safety lighting on our vehicles. Traditional yellow lights can get lost in a busy roadway. Green cuts through the noise, helping drivers recognize a work zone sooner and adjust before it’s too late.
