Rebuilt to Last

On any large earthmoving project, you’ll be sure to find a scraper. These machines are efficient in moving large quantities of material quickly and effectively. Their powerful engines, hydraulics and bowls make tackling earthmoving and hauling tasks extremely efficient. However, as good as they are at moving dirt, these machines sustain heavy wear and tear over the hours they’re in use. To ensure the continued safety and productivity of our fleet, we recently sent two 627F models for a complete rebuild.

While most heavy equipment is typically replaced after about a decade, we have two 20-year-old scrapers with around 20,000 hours on them. We considered upgrading these machines, but the staggering prices, combined with the complex computer systems in the newer models, made purchasing new ones an undesirable option If you ask any operator who’s run pan at Kinsley Construction, they will sing the older models’ praises – they were simpler in terms of technology, had a comfier cab and better vantage points. The newer models of scrapers also risk downtime when it comes to complex electronic issues.

Restoring Reliability

After deciding to rebuild the machines, we partnered with two Cat dealerships to leverage Caterpillar’s Certified Rebuild program. This cost-effective program restores equipment to like-new condition, including complete machine rebuilds, power trains, individual components, hydraulic systems and engines. Additionally, once rebuilt, the scrapers are covered under a factory warranty, further extending the life of these machines.

Over four and a half months, our scrapers went through the following rebuild process:

Scrapers are disassembled to bare frames.
Frames and welds are tested/inspected to ensure structural integrity.
All components (engines, transmissions, differentials, and hydraulic pumps, cylinders and valves) are rebuilt to factory specifications.
The bowl, bowl frame and cushion hitch are refurbished.
New hydraulic hoses and wiring harness are installed.
The cab is completely refurbished.
A new paint job is applied.

The Value of Rebuilding

Rebuilds not only make economic sense, but also offer several additional benefits. By rebuilding existing equipment, we eliminate the learning curve for operators and mechanics, saving time and resources that would otherwise be spent on training. This also avoids downtime associated with introducing new machines, allowing our team to continue working efficiently. Additionally, rebuilds ensure our operators have reliable machines that can consistently get the job done. While operating scrapers can be demanding, the versatility gained through experience with these machines is unmatched.
