Thinking Outside the Quarry: The Secret Behind Faster Material Production

Every project manager knows the feeling. Crews are ready, the weather window is narrowing and the concrete is still miles away in a mixer truck caught in traffic. This can be the difference between staying on schedule and falling behind. For decades, fixed concrete plants have been the industry standard, delivering quality material to projects of every size. But when schedules tighten and concrete demand increases, traveling back and forth from a job site can create unnecessary risksThat’s why we decided to think outside the quarry.

The Origin Story
The idea of bringing a concrete plant directly to a job site isn’t new to Kinsley. One of the earliest examples came in 1998 when our founder, Bob Kinsley, faced a challenge while overseeing construction of a 1-million-square-foot distribution center for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. The volume of concrete required pushed traditional delivery methods to the limit. In response, Bob transformed project logistics by deploying a temporary portable concrete batch plant on site. The result was immediate—greater efficiency, reduced traffic congestion and production aligned precisely with demand. Nearly three decades later, that same grit and problem-solving mindset continues to shape how we approach challenges across all Kinsley companies, including services offered by our certified materials supplier Kinsley Materials.

The First of Many Moves
Portable plant solutions have long been a field-proven capability within Kinsley Construction. What’s changed is that Kinsley Materials is now applying this approach more frequently across projects in South Central Pennsylvania.

A major step forward came when Kinsley Materials and Kinsley Construction teamed up for Phase 1 of the Manchester Commerce Center project, a 246-acre industrial park in York, PennsylvaniaKinsley Materials was contracted to supply roughly 25,000 cubic yards of concrete for a 587,000-square-foot speculative warehouse. To stay competitive and secure future work, the team leaned into a different delivery model: a portable concrete plant.

Our portable planoperated out of our PenRoc quarry through late fall 2023. In December 2023, an eight-person crew, along with a crane operator, dismantled the plant under the direction of Kinsley Materials vice president of operations Chris Nolt and plant manager Jeremy Dayley. The system was then loaded onto eight flatbed trailers and transported directly to the Manchester Commerce Center job site.

Those were some sleepless nights thinking about what needed to happen the next day to keep things moving seamlessly.” — Jeremy Dayley, Plant Manager

Once on site, reassembly took two and a half days of precision crane picks to set the plant framework, bins and drum section. From there, third-party calibration and testing ensured everything was dialed in for production. By mid-January 2024, the portable plant completed its first official pour—footers for the project—marking a successful start to on-site production. Watch it below for yourself.

Why Portable Plants Change the Game
Moving an entire concrete plant isn’t a small undertaking. But when it arrives on site, the benefits are immediate. A few include:

  • Less Trucks: Instead of 14–18 mixer trucks constantly in rotation, crews typically operate with a smaller staged fleet focused on keeping pours continuous and efficient. The result is simpler logistics, fewer traffic conflicts and tighter control over production on site.
  • On-Demand, Custom Mixing: We get fresh, high-performance concrete exactly when the crew is ready for a pour. No scheduling conflicts, no traffic delays. Plus, our portable setup allows us to pivot from high-strength structural mixes to specialized decorative finishes on a dime.
  • Real-Time Quality Control: With an on-site testing facility, our production team, QC tech and project managers can talk face-to-face and make rapid adjustments to mix proportions instantly.
  • Drastic Waste & Emission Cuts: Mixing exactly what we need on site minimizes excess waste and disposal costs. Fewer trucks on the road also means a massive drop in fuel consumption and transportation emissions, keeping our operations tight and sustainable.
  • Good Neighbor Policy: Fewer concrete trucks rolling in and out means less dust, less noise and less traffic headaches for the surrounding community.

Where is the Portable Plant Now?
Since the Manchester project, our portable plant method has continued to gain momentum. One example is Locust Point, a 67-acre development for two future warehouses. For this project, Kinsley Materials gave the client a choice: supply concrete through our fixed plant at PenRoc or dedicate the portable plant directly to the job site. The client selected the portable plant to secure a dedicated on-site production setup, ensuring real-time supply, reduced trucking demands and tighter control over scheduling and pour sequencing. Today, this plant is supplying more than 29,000 cubic yards of concrete stormwater systems, paving and building pads.

We’re Ready When You Are
At the end of the day, portable batching isn’t just about moving materials across the county. It’s about keeping your projects on schedule and costs under control from the start. When timing matters most, we’re not waiting on deliveries, we’re already on site and ready to keep the work moving.
