A New Era of Care: WellSpan Newberry Hospital
For years, northern York County residents made the trip to York, Harrisburg or beyond for medical care. Now, that’s all changing. When WellSpan Health announced plans for three new hospitals, the mission was clear: deliver high-quality, 24/7 medical care right where it’s needed most.
To make it happen, WellSpan teamed up with Emerus, the nation’s leading developer of small-format hospitals, bringing new facilities to Carlisle, Newberry Township and Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania. Kinsley Construction was hired as the general contractor for the Newberry site, and though it was the last of the three to break ground, it ws the first of the three small-format hospitals to open.
Construction with a Cause
Construction began in January 2025 with site preparation, erosion control and concrete pours for the building pad. By April, the slab-on-grade was complete, temporary utilities were in place and steel framing began. Community excitement reached a peak during the May 2025 beam‑signing ceremony, where local leaders, hospital staff and project partners signed a structural beam to leave their mark on the future facility.
Through the summer, exterior work progressed with roofing, sheeting and water barriers, while interior systems and infrastructure were built out. Our team skillfully addressed complex challenges, such as uncovering unexpected gas and water lines and managing groundwater intrusion during stormwater basin excavation, which required design adjustments and temporary material delays. Despite these hurdles, construction stayed on schedule with coordinated planning and proactive communication.
By fall, the building’s exterior was taking its final shape with sidewalks installed and interior finishes progressing. With medical equipment in place, exterior adjustments completed and permanent power brought online, the hospital reached completion in February 2026.
People, Purpose and Community Impact
Today, the hospital features 10 inpatient beds, a full‑service emergency department and comprehensive diagnostic capabilities including X‑ray, CT, ultrasound, laboratory and cardiac testing—providing residents with a level of care previously only available in larger cities. Local police and EMS have noted that the addition of a nearby emergency department with inpatient capabilities will improve response times and overall outcomes.
For families who once traveled long distances for care, WellSpan Newberry Hospital brings vital services closer to home. We’re proud to have helped bring this small-format hospital to our community. Expected to begin accepting patients in February 2026, it will expand access to healthcare throughout northern York County and ensure that world-class care is truly within reach for everyone.
