Deashané “Nay” Barrick – Rebar Detailer
From the moment she first played The Sims in 8th grade, Deashané “Nay” Barrick knew she loved building and design. That fascination led her to pursue architecture, enrolling at York County School of Technology for architectural drafting and later earning an associate degree in computer-aided drafting and design at York Technical Institute. But a teacher’s guidance would steer her toward a less conventional path: rebar detailing.
“I realized that rebar gave me the chance to apply more mathematics and really challenge myself,” Nay says. For her college externship, she had the choice between an architectural drafting firm or a rebar company—and she chose the latter. It was a decision that would ultimately shape her career.
In May 2025, Nay joined Kinsley Materials as a rebar detailer. Today, she works on foundational elements like pier footings and spread footings, translating blueprints from architects and engineers into precise rebar layouts. Nay especially enjoys foundation and vertical work, where her technical expertise
contributes to critical structural elements that often go unseen. In her role, Nay completes each calculation manually—a process that has strengthened her attention to detail. “Doing everything manually forces you to be more careful. While it takes more time, it’s made me a better detailer,” she says.
As the only person in her family in a technical field, Nay hopes to inspire other women to explore careers in construction and technology. “Take a chance. Be open to fields you don’t know much about. Don’t be afraid to pursue a career where there aren’t many women. Build your community and make it inviting for yourself,” she advises.
Nay is also committed to helping others succeed. She is currently creating a “detailer’s
checklist” to support new team members with minimal drafting experience, ensuring they have the resources to develop their skills effectively. She thrives on the balance between independence and collaboration, appreciating that she can build her own skills while still being part of a team, a dynamic she finds especially rewarding and where the camaraderie is even stronger.
Outside of work, Nay is an avid learner. She enjoys line dancing, cooking, YouTube browsing, sewing and music of all genres. Looking ahead, she hopes to return to school to expand her knowledge and grow in this evolving field.
